ABOUT THE ROLE  

 

Nominet are seeking a Data Engineer to work in Data Engineering capability for the Registry and BAU side of the Nominet business.  

 

The main goal of the function is to support the Insights Team, and the  Data Engineer will focus on delivering the datasets, types of data, accuracy and formats required to support the Insights Teams activity, as well as maintaining and developing the tools and processes used to support this delivery. 

 

You will be responsible for the delivery of data to run weekly and monthly reports as well as provide support for key projects such as membership voting data, daily performance monitoring reports as well as identifying more efficient ways to capture, store, manage and track data through the analytical and reporting processes.  

 

As we seek to re-engineer the end-to-end analytical self-serve process as well as the transformation of visualisation tooling, ETL and the underlying analytical database, you will have a hands-on role in delivering these transformations supported by the Lead and Senior Data engineers.  

 

 

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING 

 

  • Day to day delivery of the data engineering requirements to support the Insights Team against the 3-year Insights plan. 

  • Implementation of sustainable options/solutions to everyday issues, maintain, and sustain the tools and technology required to deliver accurate, complete, appropriate data for the use of the Insights Team to deliver insights, reports, analytics, and data-based value add outputs into the Nominet business (and our extended customers) 

  • Fix immediate issues and evolve longer-term forward-thinking tools / techniques.  

  • Have a clear understanding of Data and what needs to be delivered 

  • Take Responsibility for supporting daily access to the right data, in the right format, at the right time and for the appropriate applications.  

  • Responsible for to providing an appropriate level of knowledge to effectively support Oracle.  

  • Responsible for day-to-day delivery of the data delivery systems and processes  

  • Escalate any potential issues, and forecasting / managing potential conflicts such as peak demands on the system, and bottlenecks on delivery / tools management.  

  • Ensure all elements of the data delivery system are sustainable and optimised especially during transition phases of existing elements to new processes 

  • Responsibility for Implementing, testing, debugging and cut over of ETL, OBIEE, and Warehouse toolsets by 2024  

  • Responsibility for regular documentation and sharing of all processes and tools changes / updates/modifications and reusable codes, processes, and learning. 

  • Avoid customisation where possible, but support automation and production of repeatable requirements across Insight’s activity.  

  • Work at pace to meet depending on deadlines of analysts, data scientists, and the business every time.  

  • Ensure that the data sets are rich, accurate, fresh, managed, compliant, and fit for purpose 

 

 

WHO YOU ARE 

 

The job experience “nitty gritty”  

 

  • Demonstrate a real interest and enthusiasm for working with data with a thorough knowledge of the Data lifecycle and the role of tools and tech at each stage.  

  • Demonstrable experience with Java, SQL and Python

  • Extensive experience in establishing APIs and creating data feeds is essential, as is a basic understanding of the principles of data, datasets, and analytical requirements. 

  • Ideally you will have worked with part of the Oracle tool stack and have worked in a DATA engineering team.  

  • Appropriate application of tools, languages and approach are as important as implementing the latest technology thinking, and the emphasis is on keeping the flow of data sustained 

  • Demonstratable desire to learn new tools and techniques and can show ongoing interest in data and technology. 

  • Experience with other database technologies e.g. SQL Server, Postgres is desirable 

  • Experience in supporting tooling transformations would be an advantage. 

  • Ability to deliver on time, every time is essential. 

  • Demonstrably understands the implications, requirements, and challenges of agile, productionisation, and delivering self-serve data  

  • Have solid experience in implementing, testing, bug fixing and long-term running of the replacement tools  

  • Programming and specific tool / operating system knowledge is a must.
