ABOUT OUR ROLE  

 

Nominet are seeking a Lead Data Engineer to stand up and develop a Data Engineering capability for the Registry and BAU side of the Nominet business. The main goal of the function is to support the Insights Team in being able to access the right data, in the right format, at the right time and for the appropriate applications – including the provision of the required environments / structures and tools to facilitate their work.  

 

Currently the data warehouse, ETL, Registry platform and self-serve capabilities are all locked into Oracle, but this will change over time – so this role will require a wide experience of different systems, flexibility, and the ability to support systems transformation for Insights.  

 

This person will manage and head up a team of 2 other data Engineers, working in alignment with the Lead Analyst, and reporting to the Head of Insights to deliver against the requirements as laid out in the 3-year insights team plan.  

 

 

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Accountable for delivering the data, tools, processes, and systems, to ensure delivery of the existing 3-year plan to meet quarter by milestones.  

  • Responsible for building a strong and capable Data Engineering (DE) Team for Insights to perceptibly optimise the speed accuracy and accessibility of the data and processes require to support the Team’s deliverables.  

  • Leading the DE team through the required changes to meet the business’ expectations, and for directly managing the Data Engineering roles 

  • Ensuring the DE team delivering at pace to meet deadlines of analysts, data scientists, and the business every time.  

  • Delivery of data sets that are rich, accurate, fresh, managed, compliant, fit for purpose, and easily accessible. Planning and delivering data engineering solutions to BAU, Registrar channel, GTLDs through existing and replacement tools and systems, and for identifying appropriate data involvement in enterprise-wide technology delivery projects. 

  • Scheduling of data engineering resources in collaboration with other functions e.g. Dev Ops to ensure aligned and seamless delivery without down time or interruption to capabilities so that everyone can access the data they require on time in a suitable format  

  • Accountable for the supply of technical expertise and effective planning of resources to fix immediate issues sustainably and evolve longer-term forward-thinking tools / techniques.  

  • Responsible for driving a culture of automation, productionisation, and development, and promoting Agile mindset / ways of working where possible in line with the rest of the IE&O function.  

  • Ensuring the appropriate level of skill across existing and newly adopted tools and processes, and avoiding single points of failure withing the Data Engineering function  

  • Modernising methodologies and languages to fit the task in hand if current approaches have not produced solutions at a required level of acceptance criteria e.g. speed, level of accuracy etc even if these require upskilling / educating the Team.  

  • Accountable for ensuring the effective contributions by Data Engineering to enterprise-wide projects such as TTP and RDP, and should work with the Head of Insights to responsibly ensure that solutions support and enable Data and Insights across Nominet, taking interdependencies of systems, tools, and data sets into account  

  • Responsible for the design, documentation and socialisation of all processes and tools changes / updates/modifications and all research behind tooling recommendations and requirements 

 

 

WHO YOU ARE 

 

You will have a real interest and enthusiasm for working with data. You will have a thorough knowledge of the Data lifecycle and the role of tools and tech at each stage. Appropriate application of tools, languages and approach are as important as implementing the latest technology thinking, and the emphasis is on keeping the flow of data sustained. You’ll be a people leader and feel comfortable leading a team and strategy. You’ll bring fresh ideas to the table and have the ability to flex your approach with operational parameters to deliver on time, every time. 

 

You’ll also have.. 

  • Led a data engineering team, leading a team through change would be beneficial. 

  • Strong experience with Java, SQL and Python

  • An excellent eye for detail, flexible approach to problem solving, and the ability lead the team in hitting deadline and quality benchmarks.  

  • Demonstrate grasp of appropriate technologies and the debates surrounding types of data tooling required, and ability to convey requirements and options to end users in commercial and lay persons terms. 

  • Proven experience of working within a cross functional environment and servicing people who may not have a technology background.  

  • Programming and specific tool / operating system knowledge is a must (Java, SQL, Python) – but the Data Engineering function must support and deliver against the specific requirements of the Insights team, modernising tools, and languages / working relationships with other functions to achieve this – candidate must show ability to flex in this way and understand the relative demarcations between this and other teams’ roles  

  • First-rate data tool knowledge drawn from previous experience in a similar role 

  • Strong Oracle knowledge but with demonstrable capabilities across other tools sets  

  • Experience of OBIEE reports, dashboards, security model and RPD development desirable 

  • Experience with other database technologies e.g. SQL Server, Postgres is desirable
