Main Job Purpose

As Release and Deployment Manager you will own the release management process within the Internet Engineering and Operations department. You will manage and coordinate all software and infrastructure releases, liaising with key stakeholders throughout the development, testing and deployment periods.

Job Summary

  • Manage production releases, including maintaining thorough documentation, chairing of release meetings, resource planning, release governance, and communication with the wider business.
  • Capture and enact improvements to the release management process.
  • Liaise with Software Developers, Testers, DevOps engineers, Infrastructure Engineers and Project Managers throughout the release period.
  • Orchestrate new software package builds via our Continuous Integration/Delivery framework.
  • Troubleshoot any deployment issues in beta; automate checks and processes where appropriate.
  • Understand inter-dependencies and critical paths in application deployment.
  • Run daily stand-ups during release cycles.
  • Represent release management during ISO 20000 certification audits.
  • Produce release timelines and rollback plans that minimise disruption for our customers.
  • Coordinate the testing process, ensuring that QA engineers are suitably briefed to undertake testing.
  • Assign issues and bug reports to the appropriate team.
  • Respond swiftly to emerging requirements and unexpected consequences during the release period.
  • Contribute towards a process that transitions the team away from large-scale software releases to smaller (often daily) changes.
  • Maintain release instructions and catalogue infrastructure changes.
  • Communicate any application downtime effectively, enabling informed decision making across teams.


Key Requirements

  • Experience working in a software development environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, ensuring all parties are fully briefed throughout the release process.
  • Write clean and exhaustive documentation that will be scrutinized in-line with ISO accreditations.
  • Ability to write SQL queries, traverse log files and write code when appropriate. Knowledge of Linux also essential.
  • Good knowledge of scripting in a suitable language (e.g. Python, Perl, Bash).
  • Confident working with multiple internal stakeholders and liaising with clients when necessary.
  • Have a deep understanding of software development cycles and methodologies.
  • Experience generating reports and tracking issues within JIRA.
  • Review technical changes (source code and infrastructure configuration) within the Code Review process.
  • Understand sprints and Agile methodologies.
