The DNS Analyst/Research engineer will perform three main functions:


  • Investigate the status of current DNS protocols and ongoing developments to change/improve them and how these protocols are being implemented in the real world. To achieve this they will interact with various standards bodies to review/influence protocol change/design work.


  • Analyse traffic data to the Nominet Auth and Recursive platforms using a combination of Nominets in house tools, packet captures and scripts/tools specifically developed for the purpose. This analysis will be used to drive change into operations and business direction for new products and services.


  • Monitor and test changes to various DNS software implementations of the protocol to develop potential operational improvements/advice for the operational team to implement.





  • Provide technical expertise to assist in the research of updates to existing Internet protocols.
  • Monitor and take part in mailing lists for appropriate standards bodies eg IETF, RIPE, DNS-OARC and attend meetings of these groups.
  • Provide reviews of existing internet standards as they make there way through the standards bodies.
  • Evaluate existing standards and provide out of the box thinking on how things could be improved, collaborate with peers on writing and presenting standards drafts where they may benefit the protocol and Nominets aims.
  • Be a subject matter expert in existing and developing Internet protocol standards and how they are implemented in the real word, with a focus on DNS and registry operations.
  • Use Nominet in house and self developed tools to analyse Nominets vast amount of DNS Data to provide both technical and business direction.

  • Knowledge of existing DNS/DNSSEC protocol standards.
  • Knowledge of Internet operations with a strong focus on DNS.
  • Knowledge of existing network and DNS implementations and how different vendors inter-operate.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with network packet captures.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to think laterally and look beyond the obvious.
